August Outpost Line
Through August 1952 the fighting spread beyond Bunker Hill into a broader contest for the whole line of combat outposts screening the Marine front.
As the Chinese pressed their attacks, a series of forward positions came under assault, including the outposts on the division's flanks and the critical heights overlooking the Panmunjom peace corridor, where garrisons endured heavy shelling and infantry rushes through the month. The Marines fought to hold these scattered hills, defending positions like Stromboli and the combat outposts forward of the main line, trading fire across no-man's-land and committing reserves where the pressure grew heaviest. The cumulative cost of holding the outpost line through August was steep, the casualties mounting across the sector even where no single hill earned the fame of Bunker Hill. The month's fighting demonstrated that the entire screen of outposts, not just the celebrated heights, was under sustained and deadly pressure.
