Battle for Hoi An
The battle for Hoi An was one of the local actions of the Tet Offensive in the coastal lowlands south of Da Nang, where Communist forces struck the provincial town as part of the wider assault on the cities and towns of I Corps.
The Marines, together with Vietnamese forces, moved to defend and clear the town as the enemy attempted to seize it and the surrounding area. The fighting was part of the pattern repeated across the region during Tet, the enemy infiltrating and attacking a populated center, the allies counterattacking to drive him out in close combat among the buildings and approaches. The attack on Hoi An was repelled and the town held, another local defeat for the offensive's aim of capturing and holding the urban centers. It formed one piece of the broader Marine effort to defend the towns and bases of the northern provinces during the Tet emergency.
