Humanitarian· Kurdish Relief (Op PROVIDE COMFORT)
Camp Denton
Camp Denton was a base camp established in support of Operation Provide Comfort, part of the network of installations set up to house and sustain the forces conducting the 1991 humanitarian relief effort in the region of northern Iraq and southern Turkey.
The camp provided quarters and a base of operations for Marines and other personnel engaged in the relief and security mission, one of the support facilities that underpinned the effort to aid the displaced Kurdish population. Like the air base and the harbor, it was a piece of the operation's supporting infrastructure rather than a site of fighting, part of the logistical and basing framework that made the sustained humanitarian intervention possible. Camp Denton's role reflected the practical requirements of mounting and maintaining a substantial military presence in support of relief operations, the unglamorous foundation of basing and support beneath the visible work of delivering aid and protection.
