Civil Aid and Humanitarian Operations
Civil Aid and Humanitarian Operations is a thematic grouping for Marine Corps deployments in support of civil authority and humanitarian response that fall outside discrete combat campaigns.
Operations include suppression of civil disturbances, riots, prison disorder, and similar internal security missions, as well as disaster response and humanitarian assistance ashore. The earliest documented events in this category are the 1824 Massachusetts State Prison riot under Major Robert Wainwright and the 1825 fire response at St. Thomas in the Danish Virgin Islands. The category is open-ended and accumulates additional events from across the Corps' history, including later mail-train guard duty, riot response operations, and natural disaster relief.
