First Marine Fire Return
Somalia was supposed to be a relief mission, but Mogadishu was a city of guns, and sooner or later someone was going to point one at the Marines.
This marks the moment they fired back, one of the first times the intervention's careful humanitarian veneer cracked and the Marines answered hostile fire with their own. It was a small thing and a telling one. The factions and bandits who infested the ruined capital did not always respect the difference between men delivering food and men to be fought, and the Marines had to be ready to defend themselves while holding to the restraint the mission demanded. That tension, aid in one hand and a rifle in the other, ran through the whole operation. The first return of fire was its signature, proof that even feeding the starving in a lawless land meant being prepared, at any instant, to fight.
