Guantanamo Bay secured
After the hard fighting to take and hold Camp McCalla, the area around Guantánamo Bay still had to be fully secured.
Once the Marines drove the Spanish away from the well at Cuzco, the nightly attacks on the camp stopped and the enemy retreated far up the country. The Marines kept up patrols and posted pickets and lookouts around their position, sending out scouting parties to search the surrounding hills for any returning enemy. They also crossed the bay in small boats to clear a point that had been used to harass Navy crews looking for mines. With the area now quiet and under control, Guantánamo Bay was firmly held as the Navy's advance base. It would later become a permanent U.S. naval station that remains in use today.
