Combat· Gulf War (Op DESERT SHIELD/STORM)
Khanjar Forward Logistics Base
Forward Operating Base Khanjar was the massive logistics base the Marines established deep in the Saudi desert to sustain their drive into Kuwait.
Built rapidly and far forward, it stockpiled the enormous quantities of fuel, ammunition, water, and supplies needed to support a two-division mechanized assault across the breaching sites and on to Kuwait City. Creating and protecting such a base in open desert close to the enemy was a major undertaking, an essential but unglamorous feat of combat logistics that made the speed of the ground offensive possible. The base was not a battlefield in the conventional sense; its significance lay in enabling the Marine advance by guaranteeing that the assaulting divisions would not outrun their supplies. Khanjar exemplified the logistical reach the Marines developed in the Gulf, the foundation beneath the hundred-hour campaign that liberated Kuwait.
