Lam Son 719 Phase III
The third phase of Lam Son 719 was the withdrawal of the South Vietnamese forces from Laos, which deteriorated into a costly and disorderly fighting retreat under heavy North Vietnamese pressure.
Having pushed toward their objectives, the South Vietnamese found themselves assailed by powerful enemy counterattacks, including armor and massed artillery, and the pullback became a grueling effort to extract the columns while under constant attack, sustained heavily by American airpower and helicopter operations. The withdrawal exposed the difficulties the South Vietnamese army faced in conducting and sustaining a large mobile operation against a determined conventional enemy, particularly as American ground support was unavailable across the border. The Marine role remained limited to supporting elements rather than ground combat. Lam Son 719 ended ambiguously, having disrupted the enemy's preparations and supply system at heavy cost, but revealing serious weaknesses that boded ill for the South's ability to stand alone.
