Combat· World War I
Marbache Sector
The Marbache Sector was a defensive position the 4th Marine Brigade held during a quieter stretch between major offensives.
After heavy fighting elsewhere, the brigade needed time in a calmer part of the line to rest, absorb replacements, and recover. The Marines manned the trenches, ran patrols, and stayed ready against German raids and artillery, but there was no large attack here. This kind of sector duty was a normal part of trench warfare, giving worn-out units a chance to refit while still guarding the front. The danger never fully went away, since shelling and gas could strike at any time, but losses were light compared to the brigade's big battles. The time in this sector helped prepare the Marines for the major offensives still ahead, keeping them in the fight while letting them rebuild their strength and cohesion.
