Op ALLEN BROOK
Operation Allen Brook was a Marine offensive in the agricultural lowlands south of Da Nang, mounted to clear well-entrenched enemy forces from the densely populated and heavily fortified region known as Go Noi Island, a maze of villages, hedgerows, and waterways that had become a Communist stronghold. The Marines pushed into the area to disrupt the enemy threatening Da Nang from the south, and they ran into determined resistance from forces dug into the hamlets, touching off heavy fighting across the hot, flat country. The battle became a grinding struggle to root out defenders from fortified villages and tree lines, the Marines clearing the ground at close range with the support of their full weight of arms against an enemy who stood and fought. Allen Brook inflicted heavy losses on the enemy and tore up his base area, though the contested lowlands would require repeated operations to keep clear.
