Op APACHE SNOW
Operation Apache Snow was a major allied offensive into the A Shau Valley, the strategic corridor near the Laotian border through which the North Vietnamese funneled men and supplies into the northern provinces.
The operation was conducted primarily by the United States Army's 101st Airborne Division, with the participation of a Marine regiment and South Vietnamese forces, in a multi-unit drive to disrupt the enemy's base and infiltration system in the contested valley. It is best remembered for the ferocious fight by the 101st Airborne for the heavily fortified mountain known as Hill 937, or Dong Ap Bia, which entered American memory as "Hamburger Hill" for the cost of taking it. The Marine role in the broader operation was a supporting one alongside the main Army effort. Apache Snow reflected the continuing struggle to control the A Shau Valley, ground the enemy contested bitterly throughout the war.
