Op ASSURED RESPONSE
Operation Assured Response was a noncombatant evacuation operation mounted to rescue Americans and other foreign nationals trapped in Liberia when renewed fighting engulfed Monrovia and threatened the lives of civilians in the capital.
As the security situation collapsed, Marines moved to protect the United States embassy and evacuate the endangered population, bringing the threatened civilians out to safety through the violence that had overtaken the city. The Marines secured the evacuation sites, held their positions amid the chaos and the threat from armed factions, and conducted the extraction with discipline and restraint in a dangerous environment. Assured Response was a protective evacuation rather than a combat operation, the Marines projecting force from the sea to safeguard lives in a country torn by civil war. It was one of the recurring Marine interventions in Liberia, the latest rescue in a region where the collapse of order repeatedly endangered those caught in the fighting and required the Corps to respond.
