Combat· Iraq War (Op IRAQI FREEDOM)
Operation Iron Fist
Operation Iron Fist was a Marine offensive in the western Euphrates valley near the Syrian border, part of the autumn 2005 campaign to clear al-Qaeda in Iraq and the foreign-fighter networks from the towns of the Al Qaim district.
The Marines pushed into the contested river towns to root out insurgents who had entrenched themselves among the population and fortified their positions, fighting through prepared defenses in the close urban terrain. Iron Fist was one of the operations that immediately preceded the decisive clearing effort in the district, part of the intensifying pressure on the enemy's strongholds along the border. It reflected the shift toward sustained operations aimed at breaking the insurgent hold for good rather than sweeping and withdrawing. The operation contributed to the sequence of attacks that culminated in the establishment of a lasting Marine presence in the Al Qaim region, a turning point in the western Euphrates campaign.
