Operation KENTUCKY
Operation Kentucky was the long-running Marine operation centered on the defense of the Con Thien sector and the eastern Demilitarized Zone, part of the effort to man and hold the strongpoint-and-barrier line guarding the approaches across the northern border.
Rather than a single battle, Kentucky was a sustained presence in one of the most dangerous stretches of the war, the Marines patrolling, manning fixed positions, and reacting to North Vietnamese forces that probed and shelled the line from the zone and beyond. The operation encompassed continual artillery duels, ambushes, and ground actions as the Marines sought to keep the enemy from penetrating toward the populated coastal lowlands. Kentucky exemplified the static, costly defense of the DMZ that consumed so much Marine strength, a grinding commitment in which holding ground against constant pressure, rather than maneuver and decisive battle, defined the daily reality of the northern frontier.
