Operation KINGFISHER
Operation Kingfisher was a prolonged Marine campaign along the Demilitarized Zone, a continuation of the grinding effort to find and fight the North Vietnamese divisions operating in and below the buffer strip near Con Thien and the border.
Marine battalions conducted sweeps and patrols north toward the zone, repeatedly clashing with entrenched and aggressive enemy regulars who contested the ground with ambushes, artillery, and sharp defensive battles. The operation produced some of the heaviest sustained fighting of the DMZ war, the Marines pushing into dangerous country and absorbing serious losses as they sought to disrupt enemy concentrations and keep him from massing for attacks across the border. Kingfisher reflected the relentless, attritional character of the northern frontier campaign, where named operations blurred into a continuous struggle to hold the line near the zone. It exacted a heavy toll on both sides without yielding any decisive result in the contested borderland.
