Operation Thunder Road
Operation Thunder Road was an action during the Battle of Najaf, part of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit's effort to break the Mahdi Army's hold on the city in August 2004.
As the Marines fought through Najaf against Muqtada al-Sadr's militia, the operation pressed the attack against the enemy's positions, contributing to the steady pressure that drove the militia back toward its final strongholds near the shrine at the city's center. The action was one of the named pushes within the larger battle, the Marines advancing through the contested urban terrain and the approaches to the holy precinct against determined resistance. Thunder Road formed part of the sequence of operations that, together with the grueling fight in the Wadi al-Salam cemetery and the raids on the militia's strongholds, tightened the noose around al-Sadr's forces. It was one component of the combined effort that ultimately compelled the negotiated end to the Najaf uprising.
