A second Caco rising in 1918–20, against the rebel leader Charlemagne Péralte, was broken when Sergeant Hanneken and Corporal Button killed Péralte in a remarkable disguised raid deep in rebel country.
Between and after the fighting the Marines effectively ran the country, building roads, training a gendarmerie, and supplying the high commissioner who governed it. The occupation lasted until 1934, the deepest and most prolonged American involvement of the whole era.
