Peking, the Chinese capital, was the second main area of Marine action during the Boxer Rebellion and became the most famous part of the whole campaign.
Before the city was cut off, a small Marine detachment under Captain John Myers, later joined by Captain Newt Hall, was rushed up from the fleet to guard the U.S. Legation. When Boxer and Imperial forces surrounded the foreign quarter, these Marines helped hold the defense for nearly two months. They took part in defending the barricades along the old Tartar City Wall, a key and dangerous point in the line, and Myers led a bold nighttime attack that drove back enemy troops and captured weapons and flags. The defenders held on, short of ammunition and worn out, until an allied relief army fought its way into the city and ended the siege.
