Second Barataria expedition
A month after the first raid, the Americans returned to Grand Terre.
In October, Marines and seamen again landed at the Barataria base to finish the work of breaking up the pirate establishment and to secure the area as the British threat to New Orleans grew. The operation, like the first, met no resistance and cost no casualties. It confirmed American control of the smuggling haven on the approaches to New Orleans and removed any lingering doubt about who held the bay. By this point the larger picture had shifted: with Lafitte's men moving toward an accommodation with Jackson, the former smugglers' base was being neutralized even as its inhabitants were being drawn into the defense of Louisiana against the coming British invasion.
