USS Warren landing on Andros to capture pirate vessels
One of the final actions of the 1827 Aegean campaign, and one with a revealing incident.
Marines and seamen from the USS Warren, in a party under Lieutenant Hudson, landed on Andros to seize pirate craft sheltering in the island's bays. While the landing party was at work, a brig escorting a convoy of small boats opened fire on them in the darkness; the shot tore through the boats' sails and some of the sailors' clothing, but, remarkably, no one was hurt. The Americans, who had apparently been mistaken for pirates themselves in the confusion, pressed on undaunted, bringing out one pirate vessel, burning another, destroying a house used by the pirates, and raising a boat the raiders had scuttled to hide it. The bloodless action closed out the Warren's sweep through the islands and effectively ended the brief American anti-piracy effort in the Aegean.
