World War II was the largest conflict in history, fought across Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific between the Allied and Axis powers.
For the United States, the war began with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and ended with Japan's surrender after the defeat of Germany. The Marine Corps fought its war chiefly in the Pacific, where it perfected the amphibious assault, the central tactical problem of the theater, and carried it from the early defensive stands through the great island campaigns to the doorstep of Japan. Marines stormed fortified beaches across the Central and Western Pacific, seized airfields and anchorages that drove the advance toward the home islands, and finally led the occupation of a defeated Japan. The Corps emerged from the war transformed, having grown from a small force into six divisions and supporting air wings, its amphibious doctrine proven decisive.
