Al Amarah
Al Amarah was a city in southeastern Iraq that lay within the area through which Marine and Coalition forces operated during and after the drive on Baghdad, a place where the regime's authority collapsed as the invasion swept north.
Marine forces operating in the region encountered the rapid disintegration of organized resistance in the south, where Iraqi units melted away and local order broke down with the fall of the regime. The action around Al Amarah was part of the wider campaign in the southeastern provinces, where the Marines and their Coalition partners extended control over the cities and approaches as the conventional war reached its end. The fighting there was relatively light compared to the hard battles farther up the route, reflecting the uneven collapse of Iraqi resistance across the south. Al Amarah was one of the southern cities that fell as the regime's hold gave way during the invasion.
