Battle of Alta Mira
A column action on the northern leg of the Dominican campaign.
As Pendleton's main force pushed inland toward Santiago, a separate column under Major Hiram Bearss, the same officer who had won fame storming the Sohoton cliffs in the Philippines, advanced from the coast at Puerto Plata along the railway toward Navarrete. The column met Dominican insurgents at Alta Mira, the principal action of its march, along with smaller skirmishes on the route, and pushed through to complete the northern portion of the broader Santiago campaign. The fighting was light by the standards of the main column's battles, costing the command a couple of men wounded and none killed. The Alta Mira march secured the railway and the northern approach while Pendleton drove on the interior, the two columns together breaking the organized resistance in the Cibao and opening the way for the occupation of the Dominican heartland.
