Battle of Tientsin
After the first attempt to reach Tientsin was thrown back, the allied force regrouped and tried again, this time to break through to the foreign settlement still surrounded by Boxer and Imperial troops.
Major Waller's Marine battalion, now reinforced, took the advance position on the right of the firing line alongside the British column. The combined force struck the enemy in the morning and drove them steadily back through hours of fighting. By early afternoon the troops pushed into Tientsin and relieved the trapped Europeans. The next day the advance continued to the arsenal where the earlier failed expedition had taken shelter, linking up the allied forces and securing their hold on the area. The relief of the settlement was an important turning point, steadying the allied position around Tientsin before the larger push toward Peking.
