Tientsin Theater
Tientsin was a major Chinese city on the route between the coast and Peking, and it became one of the two main areas of Marine fighting during the Boxer Rebellion.
The trouble here began with a failed first attempt by an international force to push inland toward the besieged capital. Soon after, a Marine battalion under Major Littleton Waller arrived from the Philippines and landed on the coast. The Marines repaired torn-up railway track to move forward, fought a sharp action that forced them back at first, then pressed on with allied troops to relieve the foreign settlement at Tientsin. Later they took part in storming the walled Chinese city itself. The Tientsin fighting was hard and costly, marked by long marches, little food, and repeated combat, and it cleared the way for the larger expedition that would march on Peking.
