Enterprise vs Citoyenne and Cygne
During her cruise in the West Indies under Lieutenant John Shaw, the schooner USS Enterprise captured the French privateers Citoyenne and Cygne in separate actions.
The Enterprise carried a Marine guard of sixteen men under a sergeant, and they were in the thick of both fights. The Marines paid for the captures: Private Michael Magill was killed and Private John W. Keal had his hand blown off above the wrist. The Enterprise was one of the most successful American warships of the Quasi-War, taking a long string of prizes, and these two captures added to a record that made her schooner a terror to French privateers in the Caribbean.
