Combat· Quasi-War with France
Enterprise vs L'Aigle near Guadeloupe
The USS Enterprise captured the French privateer L'Aigle off Guadeloupe after a sharp action that lasted only fifteen minutes.
The ship's Marines were in action throughout, and the engagement cost one Marine and three seamen wounded. The Marine commander, Sergeant Heyler, was afterward singled out for praise: a Captain McKnight aboard the Philadelphia, falling in with the Enterprise after the fight, spoke highly of the conduct of the sergeant and his men. The quick capture was one more prize in the Enterprise's busy West Indies cruise, where her Marine guard repeatedly proved its worth in close, fast-moving privateer actions.
