Cushman's Pocket
Cushman's Pocket was a heavily fortified knot of Japanese resistance in broken terrain in the 3d Marine Division zone, named for the lieutenant colonel commanding the 2d Battalion, 9th Marines, whose unit finally wiped out the last of it.
The 9th Marines fought through the pocket with flame-throwing and gun tanks supporting the infantry against a maze of caves. A company commander earned the Medal of Honor during the fighting, and the last organized resistance in the division's zone was crushed when the pocket fell. The Marines provided the assault regiment and combined-arms teams that reduced the strongpoint.
