Hill 362A (Iwo Jima)
Hill 362A was one of the strongest links in Kuribayashi's defense line, its commanding ground giving the Japanese observation across the southwestern half of the island and the Motoyama plateau.
It could not be bypassed. The 28th Marines, the regiment that had taken Suribachi, made the assault with a battalion of the 26th Marines attached, advancing through deadly artillery and mortar fire to seize the crest, then overrunning the hill and the neighboring Nishi Ridge the following day. The Marines provided the assault infantry and supporting arms that cracked this key terrain feature.
